| Alliouagana Music Centre (AMC) |
The Alliouagana Music Centre (AMC) was established in 1981 as the new development in the program of the Alliouagana Commune initiated in 1971 by Dr J A George Irish to serve the cultural needs of the Montserrat community. It is the sequel to the Alliouagana Festival, Alliouagana Publications, Alliouagana Drummers, Alliouagana Dancers, Emerald Community Singers and Montserrat Theatre Group. Along with the Academy of Arts and Commerce (AAC), it was housed at Amersham until it relocated to the old MSS building on Taylor Street where it continued its operations until 1995, the time of the volcanic eruptions. Students ranging from 5-year olds to adults participated in the annual recitals coordinated by the Centre.
The AMC initiated and supervised the local examinations of the Royal Society of Music (London) taken by its students as well as other well known local musicians such as Shirley Graham, Hillorine Norman, Blondina Howes, Desmond “Flasher” Daly, Lenroy Cabey, et al.
The teaching staff comprised: George Irish, Director (voice, piano and guitar); Mignon Moses, Program Coordinator (piano); Valerie Cooke (flute and piano); Robert Semper (piano); Mark, a Chinese Peace Corps worker, (piano and wind); Desmond Daly (wind and steel pan) and Charles “Jackie” Dangler of the Heavenly Organs Steel Orchestra (steel pan).
Administrative and logistical support was provided by Mignon Moses, Ruth Allen and Caroline Meade of Fort Barrington, Plymouth.
